At the humble end, the Ulm Crossbowman. What other highly effective range unit wears sufficient armor to stand up to a cavalry charge and only costs 10 gold?

At the higher end, I like nothing better then dropping 2 or 3 soul contracts on commanders at a quiet castle and swooping up a whole army of devils a few turns later.
