Ed Kolis' observation that they look 'eclipsed' is based on the contrast between the body of the star and the corona around it. You need to make the star as bright as its corona. If that washes out the detail then you need to make the corona as dim as the star. We know that stars are very bright, but a point of light isn't interesting in a game.
