Questions, questions...

Well after playing so many strategy games an 4x strategy games over the years(and even running a fan site for one), the Demo of the Gold has captured my attention...theres just so much to it. I'm going to have to kick my friend who recommended as even the demo is becoming a time sink. Likely going to buy it in the next week or so now that its off backorder. 1) Going over various forum posts, etc it seems the AI isn't that great at least in the original anyways. Has this changed in the Gold Ed? (Hard to tell in the demo)

2) I know there is a list of many recommended links/mods/etc , but what do people consider absolutely neccessary to get the most enjoyment out of the game?

I will likely have more questions once I get the full game, but for now those should suffice.
