Stray arrow are VERY important to mages. Even in Dom2 they're the main early cause of mortality in battlemages and now with shortened casting ranges, larger armies, and weakened storms, it's going to be even worse. That change will at least double his life expectancy clearing indies. Even against player mage armies it helps since a nontrivial amount of spells do basic damage. And against the other spells they have a very nice MR.
