Default Display Properties of Technology for Mods

Open question to the adepts...

In a particular modified tech tree, there are several different ways to get components in the same Family Group #.
The Components.txt file has them listed in ascending order of usefulness, so no matter how or when you achieve the components, if you have "show latest only" box selected on the vehicle design screen, only the current best will be displayed.

My question is this: is there any way NOT to have "outdated" components (components that have already been "surpassed" by another tech route) displayed on the Technology Screen (I think it's a right-click on the Tech name) as a "new" expected product of research?

It is misleading to someone who doesn't know the TechArea file by heart in a mod to see a component listed as the expected fruits of researching a particular technology, if he's got something better already. There's no easy way inside the game to know what a component does until you've already researched it.

I can't figure this one out. Is it even possible, or is it just the price of "many roads to one destination?"
