Our UN troops have very strict rules regulating the use of firearms under UN rule. Whether its in self defense or not, the soldier is sent right home and the situation is investigated. A ticket to home you could say. However lately in Afghanistan (I dont know what on earth we are doing there), four guys were rewarded with the highest decoration given in peace-time for defending a base against overwhelming superiority in numbers. Its all about being there and not i would say.
