Can commanders just disappear?

Between turns one of my commanders just blinked out of existence. One turn she was forging an item for me, and next turn the item she was forging was in my laboratory but she was gone.

I figure that's not a lot of info to go on, so I'll attach the before and after for someone to peruse. Here's the pertinent info:

Province: Garillion (70)
Commander: Klytaimnestra (Naiad)
Action: Forge Boots of the Messenger

Next turn she's gone along with her hammer, but the Boots of the Messenger are in my treasury. I generated the turn 3 times to make sure it happens more than once, so hopefully it will be reproducible for others. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
