That is completely true, if you can survive to even turn 50 in a good position then the AI will start to get confused and send colony ships at you or other dumb things like that. Even with a TDM AI, they have kicked my butt before, it is difficult to really find a challenge in the late game.
For instance I took a look at what the different AI's in SJ's Homeworld scenario were doing, wtf was my first comment followed by wow, im 1/50 of their size but i couild kick their ***.
Just play PBW its more fun esp. the diplomacy.
