Starting core battle points

I'm newbie to this game,
Would appreciate any advice,
What is a good # battle points to start on a long campaign?
Seems i start to low apparently,
Just when i think i have a battle under control,I get annihilated when the hordes of enemy swarm all over!
I prefer a small core to begin with.
