Question of points

You don't say how long your campaign is, but it is worth noting that the value of your core force will increase as every unit gains experience. Core force also grows in points value if you use the rebuild points to upgrade units.

I play a lot of long campaigns and find that experience and rebuilding quickly increases the force value, it can easily double or triple. This means that the amount of points available to the AI goes up, so successive battles will get harder and the numerical superiority of the AI will grow.

At some point, depending on how long the campaign is, you will always face 500 enemy units, regardless of scenario. You could find yourself outnumbered in an assault when normally the points system would give an advantage.
