2402.4 The Swedish Nation - We trade, therefore we are.

The head of the colonization department burst into Ruatha's office.
"-What is these rumours I hear about?
We are short on colony ships to colonize all the rock worlds that lay before us, yet you've put two of our precious colony ships up for sale to aliens!
Wait till the next Tingsrad session Ruatha. I bet this will be your Last period as Talman!!"

"-Now, now! Calm yourself Tina!
Those ships will be exchanged for other colony ships from those aliens you are talking about.
Soon we'll have capacity to colonize not only rock planets but also ice and gas planets!
Isn't it fabulous?"

"-Are you mad??
As I said we have plenty of rock planets to Last us a generation!!
Now we'll have to exchange these ships, take them apart and learn that new technology, it will take ages. Instead we could have two new productive colonies within a month!
And when will we have a chance to build these fancy ice and gas colonizers?
The shipyards are shutting down one after another due to resource shortage. We can't even build enough rock colony ships!!
I don't belive anyone could have butched up his job as good as you Ruatha.
After the next Tingsrad you'll be history!!

The colonization minister turned around with her nose high and left with a contempteous look on her face.
Ruatha had a worried frown on his face as he felt the burden of the whole nation upon his shoulders.

Gee, I wish I had your *problems* Ruatha...

N,R: I've got a solution to the ice planet problem. Just give me your star charts and I'll run puppet political parties on your homeworlds. Then, viola, no more ice planets in your rock empire and you don't have to worry about trying to explain it anymore...

I should have PPP in, oh about 70 turns at my current research rate. Can you wait that long?

I've been working on my race history, but it has more internal inconsistencies than a Hollywood movie. Eventually I'll get over being embarrased by them and post it...

The head of the colonization department strolled into Ruatha's office.
"-What are these new rumours buzzing over town?
And how are those trade deals you proposed to those aliens going?"

"-You know very well what is happening.
Those Vorlons has stopped answering our communications, and their colony ship that was orbiting in our Kodiak system has left for Vorlon space. We still have good hopes for the trade with the Starwolf clan though. They are descendants from old Earth just as we. So we understand how they think.
Those Vorlons on the other hand are unpredictable."

"-I told you this was a bad idea!
What are you going to do about it now then?

"-Gunboat diplomacy.
We are planning on sending a Coast Guard Alpha fighter carrier to their home system and demand that the trade go through, ofcourse we don't have any such ship yet but soon we will.
And if that doesn't help we are sending a renewed offer to the Narrewians asking for a trade with them. The trouble is that they already have our colony technology and might be reluctant to trade with us."

"-So, now you're pushing us into a war, ending our long history of peace?
Do you really think the Tingsrad will agree to that?

"-We aren't going to war. Just threatening to do it!
Within a year the Vorlons will have to decide what path they will choose, and then the Tingsrad can decide what we shall do."

The colonization minister turned around with her nose high as usual and left with silly look on her face, thinking that this time Ruatha has overstepped his authority.

Ruatha smiled as he felt that he finally was getting a grip on the situation.
Fighters, a good argument in negotiations, he thought.
