"Alt Tab" is faster but the hallways are carpeted and I don't always get a chance.

Hint: use the shiny side of a CD as a rear-view mirror. positioned correctly, no-one will ever sneak up on you again. Failing that, opening a small black window (MSpaint will do) in the corner of your screen reflects quite nicely...

All tactics appreciated, however...
