My Chemistry TA told us that he and his friends were fooling around in the lab and accidentally made methyl mercaptan, which of course began gagging them. So they stuck it into the fume hood and ran. It came out the chimney and prevailing winds carried it across the street to the intake vents of a supermarket. Caused the evacuation of an entire city block for hours. When the firemen eventually discovered the source of the "gas leak", they were not amused.

He also taught us how to make TNT. He was a fun TA.

oh oh...not good. I can imagine those firemen's attitudes (I have worked with/trained some Firemen in Hazmat response).

me be big time stinker Chemist too....

LOL remindes me of the time I messed in analytical organic and had thionyl chloride coming off, outside the fume hood....eeeewwwwww! burn baby burn! had to shower right after I opened all the windows and, turned on the hood and shut down the heat mantle.....

I was a lobster for a few days, not to mention on everyone's poop list....

Oh my. Sulfonyl chloride is some nasty damn stuff. We had some in organic lab--sealed in an amber bottle, with several layers of P-Film around the seal.

I don't think we ever had to open it, thank the forces.

Hello all.
In Australia, we add ethane thiol to the natrual/LPG gas to give it a unique odour.
I have in my stores here 2 L of ethane thiol in 500 mL bottles, they have never been opened, they are still sealed, they still contain 500 mL each, they are stored in my 4 degC Fridge, and whenever I open that fridge, I stink out the entire floor of the building. (7500 m3) Humans are especially sensitive to ethane thiol, we can smell it at concentrations as low as 1 part per 50 BILLION. Also when I used to work in a mine, ethane thiol was used as the Emergency evacuation notifaction; As it will pass straight through any air filter or scrubber in existence, in addition to having a very rapid dispersion speed. If you ever smelt etahne thiol while down in the mine, that meant you must evacuate immediately.
BTW pretty much all noxious smelling compounds contain sulphur ( thiols ,thioethers, or sulphoxides )

Yep. Ethanethiol is ethyl mercaptan--both methanethiol/methyl mercaptan and ethanethiol/ethyl mercaptan are pretty pungent. In my lab we commonly use 2-mercaptoethanol (OH-CH[sub]2[/sub]-CH[sub]2[/sub]-SH), which is pretty bad itself, though in reality not as bad as TEMED (tetraethylmethylenediamine). Both of these we use in dealing with proteins, though we keep them in much smaller quantities than what Possum describes (<25 mL).
