Default Explain Sea Battle

I'm a newbie and I just had a sea battle as Machaka versus Ry'leh and got toasted and I wonder if someone can explain what happened.

I was breaking a siege. His forces his pretender 4W, 4S Void Lord. He had one other mage (Star Child) 4S, and he also had a Illithid Lord. With them were 25 slave troopers and 38 illithids. I was breaking the siege with 105 Ichtyid Warriors (+4 Ichtyid leaders) and a water-breathing priest with a few (7 or 8) units.

He hits my units with a mind burn and ~15 are paralyzed. Watching him cast it looks like his Enslave Minds and Mind burns are effecting 8+ units each where the manual says "one person."

Long story short 91 of my units are killed (7 of which he took over). He loses none, in fact he gained 7.

Thanks for your help!

You said Illithids were involved: The vfx for Mind Burn, Paralyze, etc, is the same as the one for Mind BLast. Did you hear a loud WHOOOOOOSH! noise as this happened? That's your aforementioned 38 illithids mindbLasting your troops, causing temporarily paralysis. It's not the spell "Mind Burn", although some of his commanders may have cast both Mind Burn and Enslave Mind, as these are astral spells which R'lyeh is good with.

Undead mindless troops with highly magic-resistant commanders.

also, if you haven't patched to 2.11, pre-2.11 had a bug which made paralysis excessively powerful.

Unless these troops are EXTREMELY magic resistant, having only mindless troops will cause the aforementioned commanders to draw an undue amount of attention....even with high MR, one will probably get through.

Of course, being paralyzed in 2.11 isn't quite the instant kill it was before, but your commander had better be fairly tough, to survive the damage of the bLasts that land.

A screen of chaff militia can help also. They'll probably get paralyzed, rout, panic....doesn't matter, they were expendable.
