Yup,
Multiple fleets/formations will screw up the placements.
This also (sometimes, but not always) works if the attacker sends multiple fleets through at the same time

Well thats cleared that up. Obviously I will have to be even more strict about allies in my space and kindly suggest they.... not stuff up my defence plans by trying to help

Yep, learned that the hard way in a game where Alneyan was my partner and Parabolize attacked. Parabolize started in the middle and we on opposite ends of the tactical map. Then Parabolize's fleet chose one to move against (me) and as he moved toward me, Alneyan's fleet didn't get many shots because of range. So, basically, Parabolize fought me first.
Now, especially in Anklebiters (where there are 100's of ships), I make sure my allies don't try to help me fight in the same location.
