Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
You do need some minimum amount of complexity (to get beyond tic-tac-toe and rock-paper-scissors), but simple can make for great depth.
Consider CBmod, for example. As far as the datafiles go, it is quite simple. At the same time it has a lot of strategic depth due to the flexibility and balance (if I do say so myself).
It seems to me that too many people try to add complexity with an iron fist and choke off depth by accident as a side effect.

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I really wish to God that some developer will take a game like Space Empires and murge it with a game like Empire Earth. You have the best of 4x game design dedicated to earth conquest in an epic and long term replayable way.
Empire Earth is just way to limited and lacks any amount of replayability. Its the same thing over and over again. There is no depth, no lasting lust to play, just play it for a while and realize how limited it is compared to a 4x game.
I want a 4x earth based conquest game! And NOT a Civilization game. Eeeeww.

I had no problems playing. Spectoarofdeath what are your system specs? Forget about realplayer..... nasty.
Use Media Player (Kinda ok but better than Real), or even WinAmp.

Sure you can. Just look at chess; compared to most TBS PC games, it is extremely simple. There is no building, no resources, no stats on units, no terrain; just pieces that have certain movement patterns. The rules are very simple and straightforward. There is very little complexity, but it is an extremely deep game.

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I have to disagree. Chess is very complex. You need to plan your moves several steps ahead. Movement patters could as well be translated into stats, as can the amount of pieces you have.
Just because a game CAN be simple to amateurs, that doesnt mean it cant be complex to professionals
