Heh, you cant get depth without complexity
Sure you can. Just look at chess; compared to most TBS PC games, it is extremely simple. There is no building, no resources, no stats on units, no terrain; just pieces that have certain movement patterns. The rules are very simple and straightforward. There is very little complexity, but it is an extremely deep game.

I have to disagree. Chess is very complex. You need to plan your moves several steps ahead. Movement patters could as well be translated into stats, as can the amount of pieces you have.
Just because a game CAN be simple to amateurs, that doesnt mean it cant be complex to professionals

I think that's what we mean by simple, and deep.
The rules are very simple, and can be listed on half of an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper with enough pictures for average joes to understand. The gameplay that comes out of that is quite deep.

Whatever you say, games that are simple which lack complexety end up becoming boring. Just look at Empires At War. Only a year later and you can get it for less than 20 bucks. (Compared to Civ IV or even III by the same time.)

Glad you like My christmas present for you (the video, not the game).
lol
btw, yeah Empire at War, what a WASTE of time. Cute graphics and nice flair, but depth is almost non-existant. I remember how i played skirmish after skirmish, until, aftr game #3 or #4 i noticed there is not much in terms of variety.

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I am playing Empire Earth now, simply out of desperation at this point, and although the game is fun, I have noticed that I really miss stock SE V features such as being able to find units, scrap units, mothball, etc.
Odd how something as simple as a scrap or sort option can really improve a game, even two games that are not related but share simular characteristics.
When the day comes that the big game companies decide to invest in a new generation of 4x games, I sincerely hope by that time the market will be far more friendly to them and that their efforts result in great sales and wonderfully rich and deeply involving games. But until then, thank you for the video and merry christmas.
