In addition to above, about routing units: units route in a straight line, back. When they get locked in a zone of control of an enemy unit (see battlefield movement, page 74 in the manual) and are unable to continue routing in that direction, they fight the enemy because they try to flee and it's in their way.
If your pretender god got run over by your chariots and died, then you either had alot of routing chariots, or a crappy pretender god, or both...
