changing of components

To complement previous answer : first step is to go to design and "Upgrade" the design, hop you get instant use of newest Versions of stuff keeping your previous design arrangement

Rename the thing then go retrofit !

Personnally if I call basic design "Stuff" for example I'll call upgraded Versions "Stuff MkII" then MkIII etc, It helps identifying "series"

Also, be wary of upgrading a space factory!

Since you have a spaceyard on the base, you are allowed to retrofit, but when you upgrade the yard component, it will start out broken and unable to repair itself!

I did that once, and had to send a repair ship halfway across the galaxy

Except if your Yards also have Repair bay... But in this case beware of upgrading simultaneously the yard AND the bay !!!
