Well, the notion of an early SC is in itself contradictory, barring a few nations who can recruit them.

I would say that wraith lords qualify as mini-SC's, with their innate etherealness and ability to soul vortex.

Situationally, your witch kings can be useful too with the right items.

Also, 2-3 strong thugs can be both cheaper and more effective sometimes than "true SCs".
