You don't have to save it if you want to. I've found one useful thing for those ship designs, though.
Start a game with "Player Technology" set to high and place the race you want to play in it. Then design ship and unit designs you like to use and don't feel like making new designs every game. Voila, preset designs for your games. I get all my colony ship designs set up and my basic population transport using this method. That and mines, a fighter and some other stuff I tend to use.
