Damaging warp points do indeed always have a blackhole on one side of them. You can even see a warning of this if you select the warp point.

Also, they do not always damage all ships and shields offer no protection only armor.

I second dmm's opinion that you will find it a more interesting game. My Halogen game has been riveting, even if I am mostly getting my butt kicked.
