First impression: drones seem to be quite powerful. I believe they will be a great addition to the game. Due to the limited tech levels it's difficult to say much more and I am eagerly awaiting my full Version of SE IV gold.
If you ordered the full Version or have the standard SE IV it is probably not worth the effort to download the over 28 MB demo Version with a standard modem.
But if you never played SE IV or if you have unlimited download capacity with a cable modem (what I fortunately have) it's quite fun.

Drones do have big warheads, so if allowed to get to their target they can do a lot of damage. However, they are pretty easy to shoot down, and are suceptable to mines (Unless you turn that off in settings) so they can be defended against fairly easily. But against an unprepared enemy they can be quite a shock.
