Hi again
In many OOBs, including Great Britains there are weapons called MG (wpn 157) mounted in what is usually designated an AAMG position (on top), (Units 284 and 456 for example) these MGs have a range of 12 and dont shoot at planes.
The reason this MG category gets a range of 12 is because of its simple mounting, equivalent to a bipod LMG. Many AAMGs have the same simple mounting but get a range of 24. I think some of these AAMG should be changed to range 12 MGs. I think this is an important change to make where applicable, because even though the range 24 AAMGs may engage planes at roughly OK ranges, 24 is too long a range for shooting at ground targets from a simple mount. These AAMGs rarely fire at planes, they are used for destroying infantry in which role the 24 instead of 12 range means they destroy much more infantry than they really should. This gives armoured formations in particular much more infantry killing power than they really had.
30 cal BMG gets a range of 10 hexes, 30 cal LMG gets 12, 30 cal AAMG 24, 30 cal CMG 24, 30 cal MMG 24, 30 cal HMG 30, same gun in all cases but different ranges depending on the mounting.
At the moment AAMGs have the same range and accuracy as tripod mounted MMGs or a Coaxial MG. A MMG is firmly fixed at two points to a heavy tripod whereas the AAMG is swung about on a central pivot and so is prone to vibration, so comparably much less accurate. The MMG has little gear wheels to allow the tiny adjustments needed to adjust fire at and so hit distant targets whereas the AAMG is elevated and traversed by hand. Coaxial MGs have the benefit of firing in a more stable mounting with a telescopic sight justifying the 24 range. AAMGs fire over an open sight. Hitting something at 600m over open sights is very difficult, a hit at 1200m is not really possible without the tripod or telescopic sight. Hittig a fast moving fleeting, unannounced and unlikely to return target such as a plane at over 600m is even more unlikely.
Field Mamual 23-65 for the 50 cal describes how to engage a plane, first the shots must be brought -on line- then adjusted for -lead- by -sensing-
The manuel goes on to say,
Accurate tracer sensings are difficult even under the best of conditions.
Also a plane travelling at a conservative 200mph at 500 yards distance requires a lead of 70 yards at its closeset point, so knowing the range to the plane is also vital, but usually unknown, constantly changing, and most top mounted AAMGs have no AA sight to judge the correct lead. In any case if you read the manual fully it is soon apparent it takes time to engage a plane successfully it is not simply a matter of walking the tracer onto the target as in a ground target. Also many of the AAMGs are on vehicles where the user would not have been trained how to aquire, track and lead an aircraft target.
So to qualify as an AAMG either the gunner needs to be able to freely rotate the gun all the way around him, or he needs to be able to freely rotate himself all the way around the gun so he has enough time to effectively engage the target as per the procedure in FM 23-65.
For example If the gun is mounted on a turret with a pintle mount and the commander is in the cupola he can probably only cover about 30 degrees of the 360 in the sky, has insufficient elevation, and no AA sight to judge lead. So it is virtually impossible to track a plane long enough to bring the bullets onto target if the gun and firer are fixed in position this way. So this configuration is MG. If the gunner has to negotiate obstacles as he rotates himself around a fixed AAMG as in the back of a Universal Carrier that will interrupt his aim enough to qualify as MG. Even though a Hanomag 251's rear MG can cover maybe one quarter of the sky and has better than most elevation ability I determine it as a MG as the firer still has little ability to move about and so track the plane long enough to get onto target from the back of a cramped 251.
The effectiveness of these types of mount are probably roughly equivalent to an infantryman taking a pot shot with his LMG.
Lastly many SP guns carried a loose LMG which could be clamped to a gun shield. MG reflects this configuration better than AAMG. pictures show it is rarely clamped in place anyway, normally left loose.
Jamie Prenatt's book Polish armour of the blitzkrieg says this in reference to the wz.29 armoured car.
The turret also had an antiaircraft mount, but its use was discontinued in the mid-1930s when increasing aircraft speed made it impractical.
So Ive done a survey of all the AAMGs that are less than 20mm to see what the effect is in the OOBs of these changes. Every unit that has an AAMG less than 20mm is included. Where the AAMG is mounted the same as Great Britains wpn 157 MG Ive recommended it change to MG.
For M3 Halftracks if the picture shows no ring mount then I've recomended change to MG
For turret top MG removal. Recommend for Great Britain (British policy) and Commonwealth countries. Retain for China, Italy as I think they may have been supplied by USA and retain if I think they are captured from USA, Japan. Yugosalvia, Greece I assume are Great Britain supplied. If an OOB includes a Firefly I assume they are supplied by Great Britain, Poland. I am unsure what French/Belgian/Netherlands policy was on turret top MGs though they are possibly sourced from USA Ive put in remove. If unsure Ive removed them as most verifyable photos show none.
Also most period pictures of the vehicles wich in the game have an AAMG show the vehicle without an AAMG. Russian T26 and BTs for example.
Gordon Rottmans book, WW2 infantry anti-tank tactics says the Marines often removed the turret MG as the japanese jumped on top and used them against the Marines.
USA unit 383 T1E2 Halftrack seems wrong and maybe didnt see service. the book M3 Halftrack in action says this.
T1E1 - M2 based mobile anti-aircraft gun featuring an open rear with a Bendix mount featuring two .50 inch (12.7 mm) M2 machine guns. The Bendix mount proved to be unsatisfactory. Prototype only. T1E2 - T1 with Maxson M33 mount in the place of the Bendix mount. The M33 mount also featured two .50 inch M2 machine guns. Would be developed into the M3 based T1E4.
In Spanish Repubic OOB Weapon 215 50cal Quad AAMG appears on unit 271 - Guardacosta I cant establish a quad 50 cal existing in 1930.
In Spain OOB Weapon 215 50cal Quad AAMG appears on unit 554 - Guardacosta I cant establish a quad 50 cal existing in 1936.
Waterbourne AAMGs all remain AAMGs
Various errors in the OOBs are noted where they appear in the list. Some of the AAMGs are incapable of AA fire, the hetzer AAMG for example.
