OTOH does this not allow a variety of movement options for players making it suitable for PBEM for those who like to choose their own route to battle? ( and who have the time and patience to do so? )

Not really.
The obvious routes to the objectives are pretty limited and player 2 has more than enough units that being sneaky is not needed. I even stopped moving the units in the north because I got tired of doing so.
Playing as the Germans I went with a simple frontal assault and had no problem achieving an easy victory. It just took a lot of playing time to get there.
I would cut the number of turns down and move the units closer to contact.
