A new kind of map
I remember fondly the maps of Master of Magic, which were somewhat random in nature.
These maps had one thing in common...east-west you could circumnavigate the worlds...but north-south you couldn't.
I think wrap-around maps are wonderful, but if you had some impassible areas at the poles...you wouldn't have borders with so many different nations at once.
Just a thought. This may not be as "rational" in the Dom2 universe as there are certainly nations such as Jotunheim and Caelum which would be "at home" in the polar cold.

Random maps we are working on. I generate a fresh 30 maps a day
http://www.techno-mage.com/~dominion...s2/RandomMaps/
There are maps that are re-randomized as far as whats on the .map tho not the .tga
http://www.techno-mage.com/~dominion.../MiirunstX.map
Soon I hope to get something going which is both a randomly created .tga and a randomized .map

Re: A new kind of map
Great random maps, Gandalf! What a selection... hmm... it might be nice to have it also make thumbnail images of the map, and a simple web page that displays them and counts of land and water provinces... if that's easy. Just an idea - it's still well worth the time to download the TGAs to see the maps. So many!
Edit: Oh, I see that's probably partly why you have JPG Versions of all of them, too.

Hopefully even the "despisers of realism in games" would agree that marching north across the north pole generally does not arrive one at the south pole. Even if you can survive at the poles, there isn't necessarily a teleporter between them.

Thanks for the comments folks.
This is what I had going for the Dom1 maps.

I will probably set it up for the Dom2 maps eventually. For the moment I dont really need to post anything about land/water because all the Dom2 maps so far are 400 land and 50 water.

Re: A new kind of map
PVK,
I guess I had assumed that the equator was in the middle and at the top and bottom edges.
I mean...the essence of a globe is you can go around it any direction you want.
But I still find double-wrap-around maps annoying, while I find single-wrap-around maps fun.
with the double wrap around variety...if you zoom out far enough...you will see double of everything, which isn't good.

Re: A new kind of map
The world map is also east-west wraparound. If you have broadband, try it.
It feels good to build hybrids in polynesia
I personally like one way wraps best in SP, but two way wraps are very much fun in MP. You have more neighbours and expansion options.

Yes but I see the point about going over the north pole shouldnt land you at the south pole. A map which properly fixes that would actually have a few snowy provinces at the top and each one of those connect to many of the upper provinces. Same at the bottom. That would properly represent a globe where going thru the north pole just lets you connect to the northern provinces on all of the northern hemisphere continents.

Yes that can be confusing. Try the "insert" or "delete" key. It jump those maps to a full screen image. Much nicer.
