What's a theme?

Hey all, I've looked for this in the manual, and can't find it; what's a theme? I started a game, saw 'Golden Age', but it just seems descriptive.

Is this something I can change?

Yes. Think of "themes" as official mods for each nation. When you are designing your pretender, and when you get to the Dominion portion of the design, you'll notice a "select special dominion" (or similar wording). Click on it and you'll get a list of any special themes you can choose for the nation you're playing.

Some themes vary quite widely from the base Version of the nation. They're fantastic!

It just keeps getting deeper and deeper.

By the way, the Golden Era theme is really, really fun. Quite a departure from standard Arcos, with some really neat and creative units. The Sceptic rocks.
