Re: New to game-Overwhelmed 2 (updated from \'02)
lol, well you folks are very helpful! thanks again.
Isn't it more 'profitable' ie cost effective to invade and not have to rebuild the colony? leaving facilities intact allows for changes if needed/ desired but provides income / bases to expand your empire with little additional effort.
I know that no 'solution' is perfect in every situation but using troops to squash the locals works well, then the population transports can drop our people, gather up all of the enemy population and take them for a ride... err space th' hmmm how to say it politically correctly... genocide? or do you suggest concentration--err relocation camps?

Re: New to game-Overwhelmed 2 (updated from \'02)
Yes, but if it is in an area where you will not be able to hold the planet long, you are better off glassing it. It hurt's the enemy's happiness levels more than a conquest, and you avoid hurting your own happiness when the enemy glasses your new conquest. So glassing still has its place.
A good use for aliens is to undome colonies on atmospheres you do not breathe. 5x the facility slots is a big boost.

"Glassing a planet" has been in the FAQ glossary for over a year. Section 19.

Also, it can take a while to build up troops to conquer a planet. Glassing is faster.
I still build up the troops, but that's just my play style.

Capturiing a 'ready to go' planet is better then glassing. Unless you have a transport mentality and have plenty of them to keep going out instead of building real ships to protect your newly accuired planet. If your capturing planets, then you need fleets to defend them. Mines are good for a while too!

Let's not forget the all-important reason not to glass: a population that breathes a different atmosphere!

Better yet, read the wiki article on SE4's remote mining.
If ever you find the wiki to be inaccurate, out of date or otherwise unhelpful, please feel free to improve it. That's the only way it will develop.

Glass a planet when you have no chance of holding it. Either when you lack enough defensive force to hold it against the enemy fleet coming through the warp point or when defending a secondary planet prevents the defense of a primary. Generally, I allow my somewhat over-armed recon ships to glass planets especially when I can identify the Space Port planet!
