I'll have to try those techniques out. . . although since many of the AI empires don't seem to understand that they're horribly outclassed when I glass 4-5 planets per turn, per smallish fleet(I usually use 2 fleets per system to get it all over with in 2 turns or less), and their production vs. cost is ridiculous, their ships are falling apart due to lack of resources, and their Happiness level has to be ridiculously low. . . gee, I'd sure surrender, or at least agree to be Subjugated, but they aren't that smart. . . so I just keep going until they surrender very suddenly. By this time, I've trashed most of their solar systems. . . see the Stellar Manipulation thread. . . and now I'm in an even better position for the next fight.

Yes, I've been following both threads.
As long as you can destroy a the AI's fleet in a solar system and prevent one from getting in, then one ship over every planet will Destroy morale and prevent resources from being available, aka: blockade.
This will dramaticaly impact negatively on the AI player. I have only been playing this for a about a month, but it has caused a surrender three times for me so far.

Whether or not an AI will surrender to you is determined by the AI_politics text file. All the stock AI will surrender if asked and you have either 10 times or 50 times their score. Some custom AI have been changed to never accept surrender, or to do so at a much higher rate.

Getting to 50 times there score is as stated a matter of denying them resources though blockade or glassing their planets, and destroying any ships they have. Until they reach the 10x or 50x threshold though your demands will fall on deaf ears.

Getting them to accept a peace treaty however is a more complicated issue. We asked Aaron about it and he said they should after enough time has passed and their anger has dropped to a certain level.

I had an AI once that I beat down to almost nothing and then I ignored them and went on to face other empires. After a few years they finally asked me for a trade treaty. I have never got one to accept a trade treaty from me though once war has been declared. But maybe I just never waited long enough. It takes years, not just turns. And you have to eliminate any factors that may cause them to remain angry towards you.

I do find some of the arbitrary limits in the AI files to be a problem. So, I just reduced the time limits before the AI will accept a treaty, which leaves it more up to anger levels. That's one of the great things about SE, you can change the game so easily. Think how much debugger time it would take to figure out how to change some part of the AI behavior in MOO.

Be careful about changing how quickly the AI will accept a peace treaty after a war; in my current game, my closest neighbor (Sergetti, I think) finally broke our trade alliance because I started colonizing systems they wanted. After a few turns, the AI declared war; after a couple years of war, he suddenly decided to ask for a trade alliance again. I was in the middle of redesigning my fleets and upgrading facilities, so I was going to be hard-pressed to continue the war, and decided to take advantage of the AI's offer. About five turns later, they broke the treaty again; I started invading (or glassing) planets, and after a few turns they proposed a trade alliance treaty again! At this point, I realized we were still in "no treaty" status, and decided I should declare war (rather than accept a trade alliance) to give the AI a chance to fight back more effectively (which worked, BTW; the Sergetti used a reasonably large fleet to glass most of the planets I'd just invaded over the course of a couple turns).
