.XNB is a compressed file full of images.
The best bet is to use something like GameTools Suite to unpack it into many PNB files, make your changes, then recompile it. But its basically a Windows format coming from the MicroSoft XNA Game Studio. So Im not sure if any software exists for working the images on other systems.
