Quick update:
I haven't yet (but hope to soon due to isolation) done any further work on these files but -

The new patch appears to overwrite the modded files, so this will have to be reinstalled.

I am investigating whether changes need to be made to the mod (and adding additional icons) and looking at expanding the small flags mod as mentioned in it's thread last year.
