Default Any Thoughts?

What is a good sizes for map if I have a bit over a battalion? I am thinking of doing South Vietnam ranger Bn probably air mobile with attack helos. Maybe stick to Viet Cong to avoid tank battles.

If you are doing airmobile as wide as you like I would go at least 100.
Height depends more on the enemy force than yours as its points vary according to engagement type. If they are defending their force is a lot smaller than if they are attacking.

I would determine your points let the AI buy & you deploy to see how sparse or dense the troops are for the battle type you are playing & adjust the map accordingly.
Pretty important to get right as they are not mobile or you will just have pockets of resistance.

Want to do a campaign. Probably from May 66 to April 75.

Does anyone know the locations for South Vietnam? I am thinking I should maybe stick to the Mekong Delta and the midlands area.

Exclamation Re: Any Thoughts?

Yes BUT we have given the player the ability to change the map before even selecting the units to be used so if the game gives you highlands and you don't want highlands simply click on View Map then click on the top left button of the map screen that appears and it will give you other maps OR use the map generator and set the hill height to something you prefer and regenerate the map if the highlands is too hilly and as you click through the ones offered, make a note of the Batlocs that appear that you like and you can enter those maps using the top right button and after that, if there are details you want to add you can do that with the edit map function.

There is no reason to accept "highlands" if you don't want that type of map.

I play with max size map, all the time. In either generated campaigns or PBEM campaigns (not for a number of years now).
I don't like the small map sizes and small number of forces though. So I also tend to max out the number of core units I can have. The max map size feels good for that, for the most part. There are times I wish the map was even larger and times where I wish the number of core units was larger. Depends on the mood I guess.

I like big maps and long battles.

Gives you the chance to use some tactics instead of rush in and kill.

For WW2 battles where I am using a leg infantry batallion core then I use an 80x80 hex map.

However, if I was to play in Burma and similar jungle terrain then I probably would go for something smaller - its a lot of sloffing to get through some jungle maps if there are no clear trails.

Or one could add a dozen or two turns, we have given the player the flexibilit to design the map - unlike the original game where you were left with the turns, map, victory hex placement and visibiliy the generator rolled, and that was that. Just go into the view map functionality in the setup.

For an air mobile campaign, then you could get away with a much larger map due to chopper speed. But then the AI will be more spread out, he will have to trudge long distances to retake any V-hexes, but there will be more of him since your helos and other gixmos are expensive toys and VC do not generally have point-sinks like MBT and offmap arty. (I probably would handicap myself by limiting the lift to maybe 1 company of the batallion at a time).
