I must disagree ever so slightly... in AoW I never really felt overwhelmed by micromanagement. It could be tedious, yes, but such modest tedium couldn't rival even medium sized late-games of Dominions 3.

There's also something to be said for the plotting out and controlling (without being AI-overridden) of movement and spells.

Make no mistake, I want to be like KO and JK when/if I grow up. They have done something that. just. blows. my. mind. Especially now that I've taken up multi-player gaming on Dom3.

Actually I would have dropped AOW:ShadowMagic if this was true. There's several features available within AOW:ShadowMagic which are superior. Now I'm a big fan of both games, but I'll only list how AOW:ShadowMagic is better:

1) AoW:ShadowMagic has a map editor where you can create many types of events... can't touch events in Dominions_3. Very important for creating campaigns and special maps.

2) AoW:ShadowMagic allows for multiple players on a single battlefield... Dominions_3 allows only two players on a single battlefield. Multiple players on a battlefield offers more strategic options.

3) AoW:ShadowMagic has better graphics... for me graphics are not very important, but it's enough to mention. I'll also add there's more terrain types available.

4) AoW:ShadowMagic provides overall more options in the map editor. In the editor a player is able to create a wide variation of unique items... and even a greater amount after applying the 1.4 patch.

5) Experience is significantly more meaningful and strategic for heroes in AoW:ShadowMagic instead of a fixed amount of improvements.

Now clearly Dominions_3 also beats AOW:ShadowMagic in many categories as well, but both are great longterm keepers with virtually endless replay value.

I agree that AoW:SM is still a superb game. In fact I'd tell people to buy it over dom3 because it's so much cheaper.

Cheaper? AoW:SM is $308.99!

Ya gotta wonder if anyone has actually bought a copy from them.

I've seen AOW:SM go for next to nothing many times. I guess it might have now spiked up in price or something, but in the past 5 years or so I've seen it in a lot of bargain bins for like 3-7 quid.

With silver closing at around US$14 per ounce today, that might push Sombre's estimate of the game price to be closer to Krol's quote, depending on how many ounces of silver are in a silver piece.

But, in all seriousness, I think that "quid" is Brit slang for a 1-pound note, or so I've inferred during my long readership of BOFH. Probably the precise meaning can be found in an online slang dictionary.

According to Amazon's statistics, 58% of the people who click on your link will end up buying the item for $308.99. Wow.
