Re: OT: Now for something a bit different...
I've been a big fan of the mirror universe.
As for the political commentary... it's possible.
Part of Star Trek's initial goal was to make social commentary, but it was very often indirect so I doubt it's blatantly targeted at our current situation.

But then they took it too far with Voyager. The preachiness! Oh, the preachiness! It was sickening at times. They should have stopped with DS9. DS9 was the business.

Re: OT: Now for something a bit different...
I like Star Trek, despite my personal problems with its utopian depiction. I just take it as entertainment and pay no attention to the nonsense they try to teach you. The problem I guess is it is limited by its budget. They have no real choice but to depict aliens as they do despite the unrealism. I tend to go for the bad guys anyhow. Klingons, we're not interested in being friendly with aliens, we are trying to do what is best for us. The Dominion, how many times do we have to tell the Federation not to intrude in our space. We are peaceful explorers is not a valid excuse. The Borg, if all races are assimilated and made one they will no longer have conflict or make errors based on emotional responses rather than proper logic.
I much prefer the Mirror Universe, which is much closer to how I feel Terra should act, except of course enslaving aliens makes no sense when you could remove them as a threat for ever by destroying their homes.
I liked Voyager at times (my favourite episodes were Year of Hell) but I have to admit it was faulty from the start since the whole thing was based on a mistake. Why spend 7 years stranded when you could have gone home at the start and all it would have taken was to abandon a race which Voyager had no reason to care about in the first place.
by the way can anyone tell me if this fan film is mirror universe or not? I tried looking at the trailer but it stopped after about 20 seconds and I can't be bothered trying again.
ps. Best part of DS9: Getting the Romulans into the war. Finally some Realpolitics

That was one advantage the Animated Series had; they could include decidedly non-humanoid aliens without breaking the bank.

Re: OT: Now for something a bit different...
The Xindi insectoids (enough said about the xindi) were a nice effort, along with species 8472.
I was thinking just the other day it would be good if the reimagined film had stuff like the Andorians as real giant arctic insects, not humans with antenae. Not of course there's much chance of aliens being insects, though there's always the analog excuse.

Human, alien or something stranger, be polite and I'll be polite back. Try to kill me and I'll try to kill you.
Run around trying to kill everybody and I'll have no problem trying to kill you.
That's morality and real politics.

I apologize for the tone of my message; there was no need to get personal and that section has been removed.

Re: OT: Now for something a bit different...
Don't worry about it. I didn't realise from last time how strong you felt about it. As for anything personal I don't recall seeing anything personal when I briefly looked at the reply a week or two ago, I only looked now because I had a faint idea there was something in this thread I was supposed to be following. My only worry was our friendship might have been harmed by what would seem a rather absurd topic for debate. I mean we don't even know aliens exist, why let it turn into an argument .

I watched this trailer over and over, just to be certain BEFORE I replied, but I have to say that is a bit of an extreme statement. Personally, I got a completely different "feel" from it, much more in keeping with the established "Mirror Universe", as it were.
