Reading over this thread brought an ancient incident in my life to mind...

Back in my H.S. days (when the mastadons roamed the earth), we had a weekly roleplay/wargaming club. Now admittedly we had our share of bad apples (and I bent the rules myself on more than one occasion ), but this one incident stuck in my mind. We were playing one of the spin-off games made by the same folks as Axis and Allies - I think it was Fortress America or something like that, anyways it was a four-player game, the rest of the world attepting to conquer the US of A (kinda like Red Dawn). This time around, I was one of the invaders (South America I think?). Anyways, the guy who played America beat the three of us, hands down. But when he re-conquered the Last territory in America and won the game, we didn't begrudge him the win - in fact, the four of us, completely spontaneously, actually started to hum, and then ended up singing the final verse to, the Star-Spangled Banner.

Yeah, it's nationalistic and sappy, but who cares?

EDIT - BTW, Mathias, nice avatar. I wonder what your caffeine rating in the SEIV Code is?

... Well, I do think that SE4 is the latest cool thing.

So what does that make me?

Perceptive and mature - as long as you stick with SEIV and don't defect to Quake XXVII.

Personally I think it's the UPS background colors.

But seriously, though I have personally troubled these waters once or twice, this place does have an incredible level of civility.

Let the patting-on-the-back resume. You guys are great.

I agree although sometimes it seems so mature it makes me feel like a 2 year old. I seen things posted (only a few times ) that if directed towards me would make me totally blow my lid but they are always handled very properly.
I've hardly seen anything directed at anyone. Once. But then, the King showed his true character. And that's about it.

Other threads have involved Aloofi (sp?) but that's not gaming. Thats different. And I respect people enough to know people have opinions that have nothing to do with the game and the game-playing itself.

Civility or Indifference?

Indifference as in we're all too busy with our PBW turns to care?

Not so, I think. When you play a game, you aren't indifferent. You want to win. And you may lose.

Regardless, whether you win or lose, indifference has nothing to do with how you react and post. If you post at all, you are not indifferent.

Yes I do love this community hence why I keep returning, and you know whats funny I have yet to play a PBW ...the only that was stopping me was the fact that I was in the Army and unable to play and send in my turns consistently. Especially the way the world has been the Last couple of years
Anyway I hope this community will transfer over smoothly when ever Space Empires V comes around, but I am not worried about it. I know we will!

Today is an unusual day for me as I seldom post this much. I am on vacation this week and have had time to catch up on a few things. I have read this forum and most of the threads contained in it going on two years now. In all of that time I have never, or at least that I can recall, seen a flame war or unprofessional post.

I recall many of forums that I have belonged to over the years and I must admit that this one, and the community at large for SE: IV, are by are the most welcoming group that I have ever encountered on line.

You all deserve a big hand.

I think I agree with you on this point. There was a quite rocky transition from the old SE III communities to the Shrapnel-based SE IV community. There were a few reasons for that difficulty, I think.

First was the percieved quantum leap between the two games. Many people mourned over the loss of right-click menus, and refused to move to SE IV for that reason (and I'm sure there are quite a few here that played SE III and would tell you they *still* prefer the right-click interface). There were just so many little things that changed, even if the essential core of the game remained relatively the same.

Another thing was the already fragmentary state of the SE III communities. People would come in and out, without much continuity. Most attempts to make something Lasting did not work out. MikkoT's (sp?) "The Space Debot" (and no, that isn't a typo) was one of the few successes, although it closed up shortly before SE IV's release. Hadrian usually had some sort of community project going. And then there was the SE Ladder, which kept going for a while after SE IV's release, then just sort of stopped... I think there are currently some attempts to revive it, though...

I think the existence of the Shrapnel Forums will help to keep everyone together. A publisher that provides an area for a community to foster is the one thing that SE III really lacked. I think that eventually, there will be three communities. One SE IV-centric, one SE StarFury-centric, and one SE V-centric, with some overlap between each. As long as there are a few modders to reinvent the games, all of them should Last for a very long time.
