if i remote mine, i use bases, not ships. they can carry a lot more miner's and have half the maintanence cost. unless you meant to include bases in 'ships'? Then there's the "can the mining vessel leave the area if an enemy approaches" or the "one must take the time to have a shipyard ship do the building at the location" discussions to be considered.

Re: Query on Sat Mining
I think I did built a base in one game for mining, but usually it's satellite or ships. At least the ships can move, and you can lightly arm them. To tell you the truth, I don't build enough of them as I should. usually I don't have enough storage facilities at the time, and all that extra minerals, organics and rads are just wasted.

Yes I did. Treat "ships" as "anything that can remote mine" for that post.

Re: Query on Sat Mining
What I do is find a big enough hull, and have a remote miner for each material. so that I have a miner for minerals, one for organics and one for rads, all in one ship. Therefore, you can mine all 3 at one time in that one location. Of course, if you have several asteroids in your system, then you can have more of them mining at the same time. Just building the storage facilities for all of that extra stuff will take time and you might lose a lot of that extra materials before you have enough to store it all.

Re: Query on Sat Mining
Don't ships use supplies when remote-mining at a hefty rate? My ships tend to run out of supplies in three or four turns, which make them sitting ducks if any invading ship warps in. So it would make ships as much vulnerable as bases.
I will usually use ships if I cannot wait for several turns before a base is built over the asteroid spot, and bases when I do need an effective remote mining hull. And you might be lucky enough to find this Battle Station technology in a ruin, with its 14 remote miners if memory serves right. (That is 8400 minerals a turn, plus the impressive mineral values for asteroids. Not too bad) I have yet to use a satelite to this purpose, as you have to do some expensive research and satelites cannot extract much on a given spot.

Re: Query on Sat Mining
Some of my discussion was dealing with a high-tech game. In this regard, I was hoping I could stack many sats (no maintenance) over an asteroid. But, it seems that sats count as one unit when fighting but not when mining... .
Also, with unlimited fuel...ships could leave. Of course, this isn't an option early in a game.
