Re: SEIV Gold on XP?
I've never had a problem like that with Xp Pro. Strange.
Have you updated your videodrivers, DirectX (not that SE IV uses it, I think...), SE IV Gold?
Hope you can get it right.

Re: SEIV Gold on XP?
The reason for the CD problem is that if you have game music on and the SE:IV or equivalent music CD is not in the drive, then the game is always checking the CD in the drive for what it wants causing this wierd slowdown.

True, and it does cut down greatly on the time it takes to move a ship (having to wait for the animation to end) so I guess its a mixed blessing in a way. Turning off the sound makes the APBs shoot faster to.

Re: SEIV Gold on XP?
Anyone ever get distorted text from the computer player? I've been negotiating treaties with some neutrals (which uses the default speech.txt file) and their replies are distorted.

Have you consulted your universal translator?

Have you consulted your universal translator? What I mean is, I get responses like:
Message from the Ork Clan:
"Da' boyz are too busy fighting amongst themselves, lets make Trade Alliance."
Except all that shows up is: "[][]Da"
It's not wrapping for some reason.

There's a line near the beginning of Settings.txt for "Use Old Log Political Message Display". Try changing that.
