The level of the astral mage does matter, and it is not just a simple matter of comparing gems.
From this thread:
"You also add the difference in skill of the caster and the path level of the spell to the gem cost of the spell and the dispel.
Your lvl 10 nature mage casts gift of health (lvl 5?) with 25 extra gems. Sum=30+D6(oe).
Dispelling astrologer has 3 astral. 35 extra gems. Sum=35+D6(oe)."

Re: Countdown to death
Ah, thanks Peter.
I seemed to remember it being the other way, for some reason.
I should have looked, but I'm at school and feeling lazy, that's all.

Re: Countdown to death
The level of astral mage doesn't matter, dispelling is a simple matter of comparing amounts of gems.
if he cast it with (base cost)+61 gems, and you dispel with (base dispel cost)+60 gems, it doesn't get dispelled. You can repeat dispelling with 60 as many times as you want, but nothing happens. Only when you do it with 62 it gets dispelled.

Re: Countdown to death
I'd like to add a clarification to the 'least-cost' Nature Enhancer.
iirc, the Thistle Mace is 10 N cost (requires a level 2 Nature Mage to do).
If you want the cheapest Nature gem cost, I think it's actually the Moonvine Bracelet (which, again iirc, is 20 Astral and 5 Nature), and it gives you +1 Nature (and goes in a Misc slot).
I may be wrong, but I don't think so (also, the bracelet requires 3S1N, and Construction 6, I believe.)

Re: Countdown to death
Okay, pumped out the ring of regen and that did just fine keeping me alive while I got the gems to cast Gift of Healing. First round after casting the enchantment I had healed the disease that ticks my life away. I went from 6 to 250 HP in no time - Awesome spell! I shall forever preach the good word of Gift of Healing.

It is actually "Gift of Health" It would be helpful if you use the correct name when your preach ^_^ (it would be funny if a priest mispronunce the Pretender God's name, and instead of increasing his lord's dominion, it decreases it, LOL)

"Klaatu...Verata...

"Did you say the words?"
"Of course I did! Kinda..."
(From a true modern classic in the world of film, Army of Darkness.)
