Re: Rangefinder values how are they determined?
Hi Nox
Yes thats right at the very least I have identified an incorrect Nashorn rangefinder value.
When you say Scherenfernrohr are just pretty binoculars you mean Scherenfernrohr have twice the magnification as regular binoculars. This is important because it means they will be able to estimate the size of objects twice as far away as regular (7x) binoculars, ie at a distance when estimation of range becomes important. There is obviously no point estimating the range of anything under 800-1000 metres away. 800-1000 metres may be about the maximun you can reliably estimate range at with 7x binoculars anyway, if this is the case then binoculars are unsuitable for "rangefinding". Certainly not as good, actually probably less than half as good as Scherenfernrohr.
Obviously a main gunsights magnification (5x or 2x, etc) is too low to be very useful to estimate range also. So it doesnt matter if they have 5 mil graduations. ie Fabio is correct. I was quite impressed by Fabio Prado's website, sorry to hear you think he's writing rubbish.
Heres some info on sherman and tiger gunsights, seems the tigers gunner has a better field of view than the sherman gunners. Not sure why you think its the other way around?
Shermans,
M.38
1.44x magnification / 9° Field of View
or
M.70 F
3x magnification / 12° Field of View
or
M.71 D
5x magnification / 13° Field of View
Tiger 1
TZF 9c
2.5x magnification / 25° Field of View
and
5x magnification / 14° Field of View
But Nox, you know so much about sights, maybe you have some information to the contrary?
Best Regards Chuck.

Re: Rangefinder values how are they determined?
Hey Chuck,
I've seen those before, and had adjusted may RF values on many armour vehicles. I mean I changed the values one notch up for every Sherman variant as the years went by. (for example)it stands to reason these would improve, even if it was just in training from changes due to battlefield experiance. IMHO

Re: Rangefinder values how are they determined?
Hello panzerbob,
Yes that would make sense, after all snipers have a high rangefinder value, this I guess reflects training.
Best Regards Chuck.

I do not understand. Look at Tiger sight at Fprado site. Tiger uses 4 mil intervals between markings, Sherman uses 5 mil intervals between markings. Not very big difference.

Sherman gunner has 2 sights and a periscope. Tiger only has 1 sight.
So Sherman gunner had (late war, but earlier same in principle):
- M71D Telescope sight 5x 13°
- M10 Periscope sight 6x 11°
- M10 Periscope 1x 42°
So, much better view field and many more options for Sherman gunner.

Re: Rangefinder values how are they determined?
Hi Nox
you can use the german sight to gauge a mill or even less read
http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/TIGE...tigerfibel.pdf
ie a target that is the width of the middle of the large triangle ie in line with the bottoms of the adjacent small 2 mill triangles (or at the base of one of the small triangles) is 2 mils wide half way up again gives you 1 mil half again gives you half mill etc if you are trained to use the sight it is obviously far better than a set of lines 5 mil apart.
The difference between a 4 mil and a 5 mil graduation is 20 percent 1 mil and 5 mil 80 percent. (a big difference)
Yes shermans 42 degrees field of view is better than tigers 25 but at 1x magnification wouldnt you just pop your head out of the tank? In any case the tiger commander has 360 degree periscopic view and its his job to aquire targets not the gunners. The gunners there to hit them which is why he only needs one sight. Looking at the Sherman gunners actual sights apparently he can choose between a - M71D Telescope sight 5x 13° or a - M10 Periscope sight 6x 11° both are inferior to the tigers 2.5x magnification / 25° Field of View or 5x magnification / 14° Field of View in the ONE sight. Why would the sherman bother with two nearly identicle sights in the one tank anyway?
Regards Chuck.

Re: Rangefinder values how are they determined?
Because what if one gets knocked out? having a single sight is a major problem waiting to happen. There's a reason the Abrams has a gunner's auxilary sight.

Re: Rangefinder values how are they determined?
Hi Mark
Yes thats a possibility, but if they are placed close then theres a good chance they will both be damaged.
Also Im not so sure these too sights even exist in the one sherman, And Im not sure I'm interested to find out as its a long way from scissor binoculars, and has no game implications in any case.
Best Regards Chuck.
