Re: New HoF brain storm
Well what if player A's games were invite only experts games? The HoF is a very imprecise system, and at best provides guidelines for who is good/lucky and who isn't. Trying to quantify and qualify everything is just setting up for frustration.

Re: New HoF brain storm
What if a game is big-map and the winner was basically the one who could stand out the most against late-game MM?
Its better than nothing. It does help for the discussions that toss out absolutes without qualifying them. Such as xxxxx can never win, or xxxxx always loses. (nations, not people). Its nice to see the spread.
But its never going to replace a real ladder system which has been discussed elsewhere. And even those arent perfect. To get even close to a ladder system the games would all have to be duels with the same game settings (map, mods, etc)

Re: New HoF brain storm
The HoF is an evil abomination that causes people to gankfest and min/max instead of having fun. IMVHO.

Re: New HoF brain storm
Good points. I agree with them all.
That said, I'm under the impression most players want HoF. If I'm mistaken and most agree with you vfb then I'll drop the ball. My objective is to do this as a service to the community. I'm very far from advocating for HoF myself.

Re: New HoF brain storm
Of course everyone wants it! That's why everyone gankfests and min/max-es.

Re: New HoF brain storm
You might (either for this or some other project) look into JSON as a lightweight persistence format ( www.json.org). Your data looks a lot like a dictionary, and JSON will do that fine. There's a parser module in the Python stdlib since 2.6.
I offer this as a tip from another Pythonista, not to try to influence you to change your mind on your current format. I've liked JSON when I wanted something more than key-value but less than XML.

Re: New HoF brain storm
As I said, it does serve a purpose. My impression is that people like to post their wins somewhere (for the first few months anyway). With many new people coming in its probably a worthy service. Its kindof a graffitti wall to show they progressed from the "Introduce Yourself" thread to the "Hall of Fame" for their first few wins.
As for cleaning it up.. Id like the data to be made neat. Id love to see it run thru a charting program even if the data isnt totally scientific. But it might not be worth that much effort.

Re: New HoF brain storm
status update:
Things were coming up nicely. I had completed the data gathering layer. Now all I'm missing is to write the report generator.
Unfortunately mother nature has hit me with the flu and when I was finally able to crawl out of bad and get to the office my boss has hit me with tons of burning issues. I thus foretell that I'd be seriously slowed down this week.
I would like to ask again who would like to participate in setting up and maintaining the new HoF. A 2nd hand would allow to get to a working HoF much faster.
