Wasn't there a song by that title some time back?

"History, what is it GOOD for? Absolutely NOTHING!"

Don't you mean: "War, what is it GOOD for? Absolutely NOTHING!" ?
Made famous by the Boss.

Or: "History will teach us nothing" by Sting.

Both great songs with great lyrics.

Too bad the Boss was wholely wrong, as war is good for many, many things...

War (What is it good for) was made famous in 1970 by Edwin Starr. The Boss's Version came much later. Here is an excerpt from an article about it;

"In 1970, Edwin began work with one of Motown's finest writers and producers, Norman Whitfield, who had been responsible for the continuing success of the Temptations. It was Norman and composer Barrett Strong who came up with perhaps the label's most controversial hit single ever.

"'War' was originally recorded by the Temptations," recalled Edwin. "It was buried on one of their albums. But then a lot of mail came in, mostly from students, asking why they didn't release it on a 45. Well, that was a touchy time, and that song had some implications. It was a message record, an opinion record, and stepped beyond being sheer entertainment. It could become a smash record, and that was fine, but if it went the other way, it could kill the career of whoever the artist was."

Apparently, the Temptations were afraid of the song, and so it was given to Edwin Starr."

Oh yes, I suppose the Vietnam war WAS the MOST beneficial war of the century ; Napalm was introduced, Urban warfare was introduced, Crop killers were introduced, Thousands and thousands of american soldiers and vietnamese civilians were killed, America became demoralized (or more demoralized), Vietnam became a communist country, and the effects of the crop killers used in the war still Last today and won't go away for another decade or so.

Sorry for the OT comments... I'll go away now.

"Oh yes, I suppose the Vietnam war WAS the MOST beneficial war of the century"

He said war in general. Results of some:

WW1: fertilizers (orginally because Germany needed a way to make explosives without importing)

WW2: radar, better planes, early jets; nuclear power

You do realize that the song says "war", not "the Vietnam war", right? It is a generalization...

war and warfare have been one of the greatest driving forces for technology throughout the history of the human race, starting with the pointy stick (immortalized by a very serious and thoughtful Monty Python skit . . . ok, maybe just a little bit serious? Thoughtful on tuesday afternoons, between the hous of 1 and 2, weather permitting? Nah. )

What do we learn from history? Well if history is any example... mostly nothing. What could we learn from history? Well if history is any example... quite abit.

Of course many don't like history just forget the past blah blah blah and it is so boring blah blah blah.

Of course I am biased. Getting my B.A. in history in another week and half...

lalalala

I should stop posting just before I goto sleep.
