May as well post a report while we're waiting for PBW
We're playing in a small spiral galaxy, and our home systems started out next to each other - something Slynky, having chosen Ancient, realised quicker than I did. He had a chance on turn three to bombard my planet with a missile armed ship, and with a bit of luck could have done enough damage then to end the game. Slynky decided not to. Very gentlemanly, but the wrong decision I think; this is a competitive tournament.
Pretty soon after that we both had the connecting warp-point blocked with defenses, and were trying to expand elsewhere. However, my homeworld sits between Slynky and most of the rest of the galaxy, and he's had to either fight his way through or wriggle around me in order to find colony space. Which he's done far too well for my liking, but I think it's been a big disadvantage to him.
Thanks to some poor race-design and early research decisions, my warships tend to explode as soon as they come within scanner range of his. The successes I've had have been with minefields (Slynky tried to send a 12 ship force into my home system in around 2403 and didn't bring enough sweepers...), kamikaze ships at warp points, or overwhelming numbers. The Last twenty turns have been very tense, because with a couple shared systems and no definable front-line, it's a completely different game to the Last one we played.
I've now put together a force of 16 ships, which was strong enough that his superior ships couldn't beat it, and had enough sweeping capacity to get through his minefields. So far it's glassed a couple of his expansion colonies, and is looking for more...
But I'm sure Slynky's got stuff I haven't seen (what's he been building up in his home system?), so nothing's decided yet. More news, as soon as it happens...

Yes, once again, Mark, one of the strangest games I've played and it's with you AGAIN! Turn 50 and I don't even have 20k research ! Sad choice of planets in my home system and sad mineral planets to be had elsewhere...had to build ships instead of research centers. And no shortage of nebulas/asteroid systems on my side, either. I've managed to get around here and there but I always have to build mines for protection and never get a chance to build many ships (or otherwise).
Despite our disagreement on whether or not I should have taken advantage of my knowledge his homeworld was in the next system to mine, I think both will agree a (perhaps) quick win wouldn't have been as much fun as this one is.
Also weird is playing against him in KOTH and with him in a very important rated team game. But we separate the 2 games as we should.

Asmala,
RL is settling down & some complicated, time-consuming games have either ended or left me behind. Please put me back on the hill.

Re: Are you tough enough to be the "King of the Hill"?
Looks like it will be you and me, Electrum, if you can put up with my time constraints.
I have some huge games that can be all consuming but they also leave me with some huge gaps to fill. For instance, I haven't played a turn of any kind since Friday! I find I am becoming more aggressive in RL, threatening to punch out dogs and gut cats. I need some PBW action!
Anyway, there will be times when I can play at most one turn a day and other times (weekends usually) when I can play a hell of a lot.
If this is not acceptable for you, feel free to beg off playing me. No hard feelings from me.

Not a problem.
I will be out of town Thursday through Sunday, so we may not get started until after that.

Koth page is updated. Remember you must join manually to the games now.

Re: Are you tough enough to be the "King of the Hill"?
Electrum, here are my preferences for the game:
- One good planet start
- No ancient
- No intel
- Small Tesco map

One more thing. Is the small Tesco map his balanced map where you don't use "None" on atmosphere?

One more thing. Is the small Tesco map his balanced map where you don't use "None" on atmosphere? The Tesco maps are regular...NONE atmos appears as well as all the others. Not sure if Simon ever generated any with the Balance mod.

Not sure if Simon ever generated any with the Balance mod. Yes, they are pretty standard maps, but Tesco has made an effort to keep the start planets well separated.
