A few tips which would have helped me quite a lot in my first game:
- ECM, Combat Sensors and training are very, very needed. Fleet training is easy to handle, but you will need some time to train your ships. I guess you have heard about this one quite a lot of time, but it is one of the most important areas in the game, and can truly ruin the day if forgotten.
- There are not too many good weapons around ; above all, do forget about torpedoes and, to a lesser extent, seekers. Torpedoes are weak, and seekers are a bit hard to use with strategical combat, so you will want to be careful with these weapons. (I can tell you losing nine ships to two enemy ships, all else being equal save weaponry, does hurt. *Smirks*)
- Expansion is the key, as being cornered into a corner means a slow death. And if you are playing with someone fond of technology, you will want to do your research as quickly as possible. (Having at the very least 1,000 research points times the turn you are in is needed in all games. But having three times as much is not unusual if you do want to play a tech race)
Welcome to you and good luck! Hopefully you will not run into Asmala himself for your first game, or another similar player.
