Re: Introduce yourself! :-)
I am Xiao, a 26 years old Chinese student studying mechanical enginering in Germany(like my name could already implied). I have been a long time lurker in this forum before finally purchased Dominions3 and so get my courage to register my account. (before that I was just rasisng a Chinese wiki web alone for this great series, but only with an unlegal copy... So first of all please make me a favor to accept my sincere apologise to illwinter.)
Before finally enjoy my days here, I have just broken with my lover in last Valentine day. More precisly speaking, I have known her since 5 years ago from a Chinese forum and finished a great freindship between each other,
but was always so hesistate to show up my true mind until the "most important and romantic " day (studying alone in a foreign county 8000+km away could really be a great problem for our close-minded but emotional Chinese). When this day finally comes (maybe my last valentine day in Germany before Degree), she just told me she had already made a blitz-marriage last year...
And so I have just cancelled many joys of habbits, even also inclduing this game and my wiki, only to finish my study and come back as a better man to continue our friendship before Christmas day. Maybe I can only join some little parts of discussion here with my formel memory about the game, with my brand new copy towering on the shelf like a great but also sealed book. A brand new disc without even first time of usage is just like a lovly vrigin, would u guys agree?( <---just joke)
So ended my old story, and be waiting for a new beginning, Could anybody here cast a wish for blood slaves or an endless bag of wine for me?(joke again)

Re: Introduce yourself! :-)
Hello,
A long time wargamer from Santa Cruz, CA originally. Now I am living in Berkeley. Some friends from Santa Cruz turned me on to this game. I love it! What an excellent game Dominions 3 is. I didn't get too deep into Dominions 3, as they told me about Dominions when I was already aware that 3 was coming out soon.
I have played the AI enough at Impossible. Now I am really itching for some human opponents. The game has incredible depth. I was one of the beta testers n Civ 4. Check for my name in the rule book. But this game is better than Civ 4.
These guys really have a hit on their hands. The graphics are really bad, but for grognards like me it doesn't matter too much. I just hope they take all the money they make from this one and invest in a whole new graphics model for the combats in the next version.
I remember VGA planets, and I see where the borrowed from it for Dominions. Compared to that game, Dominions has great graphics. But this is 2007, and we expect more now. This game is my favorite. I can't wait to get deeper into it. I've been a wargame since I was a kid, and that is what this is, essentially.
Anyway, I am looking for games, E-mail or server based. I am ready for action.

Re: Introduce yourself! :-)
Welcome.
I don't think we're getting too drastically improved graphics in Dom4 because Illwinter is just a two man team, one guy doing the content and the other doing the coding, with some other folks pitching in for the manual and such. But we can wish and hope...

Re: Introduce yourself! :-)
Lately Ive seen some of my favorite games get trashed by video/sound upgrades. Im not eager to see Illwinter try it.
For MultiPlayer games you shoudl check the subforum here called " Dom 3 Multiplayer and AARs "

Re: Introduce yourself! :-)
That is a good point, Gandalf. It would be a real shame if the fun of the game was spoiled in any way by reaching for a much better graphics engine.
After a while, you get used to the basic graphics and it really doesn't matter. I come from the school of cardboard cutout, monster board wargames. Graphics can sometimes get in the way if they become the focus. They should not be the focus. Civ 4 is a good example of a very pretty game which I find to have very little "fun factor". I have never stayed up until 3:00 AM playing Civ 4, but I have stayed up all night dosens of times playing Civ 3 (and now Dominions 3, which I like more atm).
I am checking in the after action reports and MP section of the forum for online games. I don't see any open ones, just games that have started already and are full.
I am willing to host games and to set up my computer as a server. I just haven't done it before. And while the help pages posted here and at Dom3minions.com are helpful. The link on "How to join a game" is down, so that is a little frustrating if you want to know how to join a game, which I do.

Re: Introduce yourself! :-)
So, I'm new here. My handle is SlipperyJim, based on the Stainless Steel Rat books by Harry Harrison.
In real life, I'm a 33-year-old IT geek from the DC metro area in the United States of America. I've played computer games since I was a kid, back in the days of DOS. My first love in the strategy-gaming field was a little gem called Master of Magic. Since then, I've been on the lookout for good turn-based fantasy-themed strategy games.
I found the original Dominions: PPP in an article about good games that run in Linux. Ironically, I don't really run Linux anymore, but the Windows version of Dominions: PPP made me very happy. Heck, I still play it sometimes. I skipped over Dom2 because I was playing other games at the time. However, when I saw that Dom3 was being released, I decided to give it a try.
Overall, I'm even more pleased with Dom3 than I was with the original. Illwinter made some good decisions to streamline a lot of the tedious micromanagement stuff. (Blood hunting used to be a right pain in the tailfeathers!) Supercombatants have been nerfed hard, but they're still useful. And the new nations are very very cool.
I don't have any interest in playing MP right now. Sorry, but my real-life schedule is too busy for any gaming commitments. Still, I derive great satisfaction from stomping the heck out of the AIs in single-player mode.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)
I am an attorney, 47 years old, and live in New Orleans. My house lost part of my roof during Katrina but did not flood. Luckily, I live in a nice neighborhood, not like what you saw on TV. My neighbors all fixed their houses and it looks better than ever.
But much of the poorer neighborhood, where people had no money to rebuild, or had no insurance, are still in shambles.
I play a lot computer games. My guy was a high warlord in wow at one time, played EQ, the original game. Favorite games are strategy, explore and conquer. MooII, CIV, were awesome classic in their day. Now I like Dominions. I played Dom II extensively.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)
Howdy. I am 37 years old, and live in Brisbane, Australia. Just playing single player at the moment, as shift work makes it hard to commit to multi player.
I am finally joining the forum after figuring out that hotmail was treating the account activation email as spam.
Mostly playing as Arcoscephale at the moment; its hard to do without the healing abilities of priestesses.

Welcome to our merry group of gamers! While Sauromatia, Arcos and Ulm are far from similar, I suggest trying something less human for a change of pace. Abysia, Agartha, Caelum, perhaps one of the monkey nations (Lanka, Kailasa, Bandar Log, Patala)...
Also, it might be a good idea to choose your opponents to be nations you tried yourself. That way, you have easier time understanding if the AI's army is strong or just big, and if you are defeated you'll probably learn something from it.
