But when you conquer a new land you bring your own crop with you and force the original population to grow it. You are the chosen by god, why should not your food be the best?

What crops do you know that grows in the dead of winter? Niefelheim surely don't eat conventional foods.

Right, that's the point. Neifel Giants may not eat conventional foods, but the humans that make up the bulk of the population everywhere do. So why do these humans suddenly come to love the freezing cold when they get conquered?

Neifel Giants eat the human men thereby making blood hunting easier. Humans are in turn forced to eat frozen Squirrel blubber.

Default Serfs up!

Or it might be that Cold 3 doesn't mean "dead of winter" but Northen Scandinavia type climate (The game got seasons after all).
Meaning it would be hell on the local tourist trade, but not so much on well motivated peasants ability to grow crops.
And nothing motivates a peasant to grow crops like the idea of surviving yet another winter on squirrel blubber.

To think of it, the very tundra-to-arid-desert-over-a-year climate change is unnatural. So why not assume that the very land and all that grows on it starts changing according to God's whim, palms becoming apple trees all of a sudden? And these apple trees dont like +3 heat scale indeed, so food becomes scarce.

Of course, you can always wave your hands and say it's magic. But then why not wave your hands and say blood magic works underwater, which is where this whole chain of thought started.

Besides, it's not based on the God's whim, but the nature of the ruling race. If you played Neifelhiem with a Heat-3 deity (which would be dumb), he might like heat, but all of his people, giants and humans alike still produce better in the cold.

I can't even imagine how merfolk live. If there houses are filled with water, do they have a bathroom?
