Re: EA Caelum – Ride the lightning
I really like summon lesser air elemental as a means to counter SCs/Thugs, it easily rips through your typical awake/dormant SC god.
It's available hellishly early, castable by even a1 mages and works good as crowd control when you start thunder striking the battlefield. There is barely a better way to spend your early air gems.
The cheap Copper plate/ring of tamed lightning items pretty much completly protects your SC against anything Air can do on the battle field, though, and neuters air elementals as a direct counter.

Re: EA Caelum – Ride the lightning
Wow, I'll bet this strategy would work great in the All-EA Nations CBM game that's going to start this Saturday using shiny new Version 3.23!
And what's this...? Caelum is still available?!?
Edit : sold!

Re: EA Caelum – Ride the lightning
I was thinking about it actually, but I'm kind of trying to get out of games at the moment.

Umm... Arcane Bolt? Anyone noticed that? It tends to shoot this thread into dust.

Re: EA Caelum – Ride the lightning
In the latest CBM Eagle Kings have had their encumberance nerfed to 7 melee & 11 spellcasting (a huge increase) so this strategy is fairly iffy these days anyway. Still possible, but attrition is a lot higher than you want and you get "unlucky" battles a lot more often, even against fairly tame indeps.

Yeah, this strat is mostly nerfed these days.

Re: EA Caelum – Ride the lightning
I wouldn't say completely nerfed, but it certainly does hurt. I always felt this was a good guide and that the particulars should be tweaked.
The big thing that Caelum needs is a good squishy force to hold your opponent of the EKs.

This guide is for default settings. I am making a guess here, but you tried to pull this off with different settings. Str 9 indeps, HARD research and a pretty crowded map. Instead of taking a province on turn 4, it took you until turn 9 to get the research needed due to Hard research settings. Ive watched a bunch of your battles, Arcane bolt isn't the problem here. You are just way out resourced. You waited too long to expand. And its not this guides fault. It doesnt work under the settings you tried mostly because of the hard research. If you were able to get to con 2 (to make some lighter armor to reduce fatigue) and evo 4 for thunderstrikes, those arcane bolts wouldnt hit you if your kings stayed on the back row. Ive watched enough of your fights, those arcane bolts only hit from close range after you give the kings attack orders.
And unless I have missed it, you havent tried mammoths. they would wreck the slinger/ hatchling/ mystics you are facing... but you really cant now because you don't have the money due to the slow start...
It all comes back the that hard research setting and the str 9 ideps makiing your start soo much slower.
If it is any consolation, I changed the orders on my god because of the chance of running into your expansion parties and got him killed by the indeps because of it. lol!

Re: EA Caelum – Ride the lightning
Yeah, Rytek, I had my doubts about the strat actually working under these settings, but decided to try it anyway. It truly does not work under these settings. Expansion is too slow, and it's hard to catch up.
