Besides any fallout issues, I'm pretty sure that would destroy the electrical power grid they depend on.

Oh well OK then.....
*fires orbital plasma launchers at all populated areas of the world, save for the aforementioned locations, then proceeds to beam power down from orbit to the spared sites*
I must say though, it doesn't have the same ring to it.....

Well beaming power down from orbit sounds alot like a microwave based orbital deathray...

I must say though, it doesn't have the same ring to it.....

You'll have to install receptors in the spared sites first, otherwise the power beamed down from orbit won't be of any use to them.
