The first nation I won with was EA Abysia, with great scales, (P3,G3 surely some others I don't remember) : pump out fire mages and heavies no one can match in EA, and crush/burn till no one's left.

Not necessarily. Actually, some nuances of regular troops usage won't be understandable until you spent quite some time meddling in magic. Nor will strong parts of some regular troops be clear.
