I download the ultimate mod too but the Version I get was very incomplet many techtrees without any technology on it. As fare I have seen it the mood also alters the main game a bit so that if you whant to keep this mood you must install it new after each patch. Personaly I find it have nice ideas but there is some work to do on this mod.

Hi tomdy2k,
I would suggest that you learn SE4 with the stock Version. Most mods will add new components and technology that will probably make it harder to learn. You can try TDM mod, though. It doesn't change the data files and behaves like the normal game, but the AI is better. Apart from the TDM races there are also other modded races that will give you a better challenge than the stock AI races. From the top of my head I recall the Vaxin, Orks, Minbari, Cephalopeia and Space Vikings to be good non-TDM races.

Have fun ,
Rollo

Being new to this game myself I know how you feel. Playing a normal game I often found that after a couple of years other races 'claimed' my sectors and decided they'd rather I wasn't in them hehe.

I've also read a lot of Messages that say to mine your warp points, but the only problem was, I couldn't ever survive long enough to develop them. So this is what i did to try and help me learn...

I created a new computer controlled race, reduced all their characteristics to minimum level, except for happiness i think, made them defensive and peaceful, and started a game with just me and them. So far i've managed to get a number of systems, progressed further in research that I ever have before, and I have yet to come into contact with the other race.

I've found this invaluable to me learning the game so far, allowing me to survive and try new things that i would never have been able to do otherwise.
