OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I really never gave this game a chance and now that I have more free time than anything, I have become interested in playing IG2. Of course I hate the thought of a learning curve, but how hard could it be now that I have mastered SEIV?
I forget why I bought the game, but I do know that I really never did play it. Come to think of it I never really played Masters of Orion 2 either.
Ok now I am getting depressed. I never really played Alpha Centuri or Stars either and I have both of those games as well.
Any one here ever play IG2 for a long period of time? A short time? Hell any time?
I would appreciate any thoughts, comments, suggestions. Thanks

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I played it, and thought it sucked... the AI seems rather content on cheating its way into amassing forces far larger than you can. It might have something to do with purchasing them on the open market or whatever it was, but the game was not interesting enough to continue playing to find out...

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I bought the game a few years ago as well, but I didn't play for long either. (A couple of hours at most) Somehow the game didn't quite appeal to me, but I felt the same about MOO, so.
IG2 didn't seem to have a clear problem back then, but I will confess I don't like how battles are handled in this game, and above all, ground battles. (If you have a big advantage in range, you *will* win by a classic hit and run plan) I seem to recall there was something about ship design that tickled me off as well, but I should really give this game another try.

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I've played it many, many times. I really liked it. But when I got SE IV Gold, I abandoned the game.
It's quite cool to start as an alien race in the multiplayer mode (against the computer), but it becomes very boring very quicly. Once you've mastered the game at high level, it's not very attractive anymore.
Conclusion:
Boring when mastered and it's mastered very quick.

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
What Timstone said.
Also, be sure to load the latest patch. It have some sort of skirmish mode in which you can play as one of the minor alien races, if they can be called that.
The campaigns are fine for a while, but eventually you'll get bored. The game is too light compared to SE4.
Plus:
1- Have a megaevil race from the very start. I don't remember their name, but you'll know because you can't used spies on them. When you find them, kill them, or else.
2- Spies were rather cool.
3- Tactical ground combat (though very limited)
4- Pirates!
5- Mercenaries!
Minus:
1- Ship design. You are not free to design a ship as your wicked heart desires. Ships have slots in which you are force to place a single kind of weapon. I.e. Torpedos in the Torpedo slot and bLasters in the bLaster slot, and since your options are limited to torpedo level 1, 2 or 3, you will always chose 3, of course, which make ship design extremely boring.
2- Every system have....one single planet!?
3- No infantry or militias.
4- 5 classes of ships only, each rendering the previous class completely obsolete.
5- No carriers. Fighters just fly alongside the capital ships. ("Captain, I need to piss". "Piss on you pants, lieutenant. No more stops until next month". )
6- No design of fighters.
And many more little details that I don't remember now. In general, the game sux after a couple weeks.

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I just dusted it off Last weekend.
Finding the patch was no fun.
A good link to the patch is here:

Doesn't sound too fun. Heck, might as well "Reach For The Stars"

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Can't say I've ever played it. maybe the next time I go to EB or someother place that sells used games, I'll see if they have and give it a go. I did buy MOO2, but I never did finish that game. Had some interesting features and technologies, but I'll stick to SEIVG.

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Played it, never finished more than one campaign, still sits in my closet (for space strategy game research purposes) - but I completely agree with Yef on his +/- list. I too liked the implementation of "spy rings". I also liked the sensor/detection bubble concepts and the fact that you needed X population to run & factories/buildings. What turned me off in the end was the cheating AI and the lack of any real tactics other than having superior tech/numbers.

I dusted that off Last week.
Just bought a racing setup - Steering Wheel and Pedals.
I just love crashing into things.
